The relationship between current and force in magnetic bearings is typically inverted via bias current linearization. This work considers an alternate inverse strategy based on minimizing the power required to produce a given force while accommodating slew rate limitations of the actuator. Continuation techniques are used to obtain an inverse mapping between forces and currents. Specifically considered is an 8-pole magnetic bearing with an independently controlled coil on each leg. The result of this method is decreased power consumption by the bearing. A method of electrically decoupling the coils, crucial to the practical implementation of independent coil control, is also considered.
