This paper demonstrates the design, analysis, and implementation of fractional order PID control (FOPID) for the control of compressor surge in a centrifugal compressor test rig by active magnetic bearings (AMBs). This is the first time that the FOPID controller is designed for and implemented on an AMB system for the surge control objective. In order to achieve the desired design specifications, the controller parameters are tuned by using evolutionary algorithms. Furthermore, a comparison of the performance and efficiency of the FOPID, PID, and an optimal controller is given based on simulation and experimental results.
